Being Visible in the Facebook Scene

The 4 Be’s of Facebook Success

Did you know more than 90% of fan page “likers” never return to the page? What this tells us is most fans engage with your content through their news feed, NOT the fan page.

Here’s the problem. If you are a business that wants to stay in someone’s news feed you’ve got to be relevant to them and engage them in the conversation. Up to 70% of fans never even see a fan page’s status update in their feed. YIKES!

However, there is hope. We’ve got 4 simple tips to help you be seen in the Facebook scene.

TIP #1 – If you want to be social you have to BE SOCIAL.

Did you know simply posting something on your wall does not guarantee your friend or fans will see it? It’s what I call the Facebook Factor. With all those friends and fans there’s a lot of chatter out there and Facebook wants to keep everyone engaged. Using a clever algorithm called EdgeRank Checker, Facebook is able to determine how relevant a post is to your readers.

So how can you stay on top of the news feed for your fans? Simple. The secret is to engage or BE SOCIAL. The more you connect with others the more they’ll connect with you. Sure it takes a little more work. You actually have to join in the conversations of others. You need to comment and communicate. It goes back to that old “build relationships” strategy. The good news is that just a few moments spent participating in the chatter can bring huge rewards.

TIP #2: Be Relevant.

Being included in your fan’s news feed is more vital than ever. Content is king.

There is a reason your fans “liked” you in the first place. Keep your content relevant and engaging. Ask questions, give them a call to action (tell them to share, click like, or comment). The more you get them talking the better you’ll rank in their news feed.

Tip #3: Be Timely

Facebook’s river of communication is constantly flowing. If your audience is asleep at 3:30 in the morning don’t post then. If they are always telling you about their weekend in the mountains you probably don’t want to post then either. Watch and test when they are most active on Facebook. That’s when you want to post.

Tip #4: Be Likeable

Remember the social awkward kid in high school that never knew what to say or how to say it? Or how about the super jerk that never knew when to stop talking. Have you read the book How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie? Phenomenal book on relationships, written in the 30′s and re-written many times since then, and still relevant for online or offline relationship building. That tried and true wisdom still applies, even in social media.

Post regularly and post often… but don’t overdo it. It’s a tricky dance sometimes. You’ve got to post to be seen but at the same time you don’t want to be the proverbial guest at the party who just won’t shut up.

Bottom line. Be active and make it count, interact, comment, share, tag, and always connect. OH! And make sure your website has a link to your Facebook and has “Like” button on every page so if they do like you, they can “Like” you.
